Gov. Dayton, Mayor Rybak Proclaim May 3 “Washburn Center for Children Day”
Governor Mark Dayton and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak have proclaimed May 3, 2011 “Washburn Center for Children Day,” in recognition of National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. The proclamation honors Washburn’s efforts to help families struggling with mental health challenges.
“Washburn Center for Children is an integral part of a caring community, with parents, teachers and a wide range of community organizations turning to Washburn for help addressing children’s mental health concerns,” Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton stated as part of his official proclamation. “I invite citizens to observe this day in recognition of Washburn Center for Children and its role in ensuring our children can continue to grow and thrive in a state where children’s mental health is a priority.”
Positive mental health is essential to a child's healthy development. With early mental health intervention, children struggling with social, emotional or behavioral problems are less likely to:
● fail or drop out school
● attempt suicide
● be at risk for involvement in the juvenile justice system.
As many as 75% of children in the juvenile justice system suffer from mental health problems. Left untreated, children's mental health issues have a detrimental impact on their futures and our community. With help from Washburn, families and the community, young children can become resilient and strong.
